CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

The next day, I was so nervous that I didn’t remember doing any of my cleaning tasks afterward. I could only hope I hadn’t done a subpar job and that I wouldn’t get fired as a result. I always had my phone on me, expecting to hear from the police, but it didn’t ring. In the late afternoon, just as I was ruining dinner by burning sausages and letting pots boil over, there was the dreaded knock on the door.

I immediately dropped the oven tray I was holding, leaving frozen hash browns to skid across the kitchen linoleum tiles.

It was Jamie Rees, come to take my statement. My greeting would have been equally as cool as his if I hadn’t been occupied with picking hash browns off the floor.

And Jamie quickly became distracted from playing the role of serious and proper police officer. “What’s that smell?”

I pointed at the charred sausages. “Can we get this done and over with? As you can see, I have to call the pizza delivery service in order to get dinner on the table today.”

“There’s no pizza delivery service in Fairwyck,” Jamie said deadpan.

“Of course not.” Defeated, I sank into a kitchen chair. “Do me a favor and open the top cabinet above the stove, would you?”

I’d considered dating Jamie Rees. Maybe, eventually, sometime in the future. But after the way he’d spoken to me yesterday, it didn’t really matter what he thought of me as I demolished my secret stash of M&Ms. “Pass me the yellow bag, please.”

Jamie did as asked, raising an eyebrow. But the corners of his mouth were raised slightly.

As I popped the delicious chocolate-covered peanuts into my mouth, Jamie opened more cupboards and pulled out ingredients like pasta and olive oil.

I asked, “What are you doing?” but I didn’t stop him when he got more items out of the fridge.

“I brought over a statement I typed up, based on what you said yesterday,” he told me as he started chopping things. “You need to sign it.”

“Doesn’t it work the other way around? I give you a statement, and⁠—”

“I wanted to save you the trip to the station, and also, Liv…” He put the knife down and turned around, giving me a serious look. “Farrow is still out of town. I had to update him on the phone. But he’ll be back tomorrow, and he’ll ask you to come in for questioning. He’s convinced you’re responsible, for both Matilda’s and Phyllis’s deaths.”

I frowned. “From some of the things you said yesterday, I thought you were coming around to that theory too.” I lined up a few M&Ms on the table, sorting them according to color, just so I wouldn’t have to look him in the eye.

“Liv.” His tone softened. “I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you. I don’t believe you’re a murderer. I just don’t know what to make of the stuff you’re telling me half the time. You are, strangely, always at the center of things, in
